Old switchboard opened up during replacement work
Built for a house that ran a lot less

Is Your Switchboard Past Its Useful Life?

Plenty of homes around Lilydale and the eastern suburbs are still running the board they were built with.

Older boards used ceramic fuses, and either had no safety switches at all or a single one covering the whole house. They were never built for what a modern home runs.

So once you have a few appliances going at once, the breakers start tripping more often, and there is no spare room on the board to add anything.

And if you want to add something new, an EV charger, an induction cooktop, air conditioning or a renovation, the board simply does not have the capacity for it.

Tested, labelled and usually done in a day

A Switchboard Built for How You Use the House

You end up with a switchboard that protects your home and your family, has enough circuits to run everything you actually use, and does not drop the whole house because the kettle went on at the wrong moment.

We start by looking at what is actually there, including the mains, the metering and the condition of the wiring feeding the board. Then we tell you what the upgrade needs to cover and what it will cost, before anything is pulled apart.

Your new board goes in with safety switches across the circuits, everything tested, and every circuit labelled properly so the next person who opens it can tell what is what.

Most residential boards can be done within a day. If you have renovations or new appliances in mind, we can build the capacity in while we are there, so you are not paying for the job twice.

I found Sam through Google to install an EV charger, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. Sam is highly professional, responsive, and reliable. During the initial assessment, he pointed out that my switchboard was not compliant with current standards and needed an upgrade before the EV charger could be installed, which was not even mentioned in other quotes I have received. Sam provided a reasonable and transparent quote, arranged the installation efficiently, and maintained great communication throughout the process. I was so impressed with his service that I’ve already booked him again to fix my pendant light. I highly recommend Sam for his professionalism and efficiency.

Asked Questions

Switchboard Upgrade Questions

  • It depends on the size of the board, how many circuits it carries, the condition of the wiring feeding it and whether the mains need attention as well. A straightforward residential board is very different to one that also needs the main switch and metering reworked. We look at yours and quote before any work starts.

  • Most residential switchboard replacements are completed in a day. Power is off while we work, so we let you know the likely window beforehand and you can plan around it rather than being surprised on the day.

  • Often, yes. Many older boards do not have the spare capacity or the protection an EV charger requires. We check this at the quoting stage and tell you up front, because finding out halfway through an installation helps nobody.

  • Safety switches, or RCDs, cut the power when they detect current leaking to earth, which is what protects a person rather than just the wiring. If your board still has ceramic rewirable fuses, it almost certainly has none. We can look and tell you exactly what is fitted.

  • Sometimes, but not always. Repeated tripping can mean the board is undersized for the load, or it can mean there is an actual fault on a circuit. We find out which it is before recommending anything, because replacing the board will not help if the real problem is a fault further down the line.

  • Yes. Alongside residential work we do commercial boards and electrical alterations for shops, offices and hospitality venues. Get in touch with the details of the site and we will quote it.
