Wall lighting on the exterior of a home
Big areas need real light

A Wall Light Will Not Cover a Yard

Some spaces need more than a fitting by the door. A long driveway you reverse down, a shed or workshop you use at night, a yard where the dog goes out last thing.

People often try to solve it with more small lights, which leaves overlapping pools of light and dark patches between them.

The other common mistake is a cheap floodlight bolted up quickly and aimed at whatever it happened to point at, which usually means half the light lands on the fence or a neighbour's window.

Height, angle and coverage

One Light That Covers the Whole Area

A properly specified and correctly mounted floodlight covers a large area evenly, which is what you want for a driveway, yard, shed or workshop.

Getting it right is about height and angle more than wattage. Mounted high enough and angled down, the light lands where you are walking or working instead of in your eyes.

We aim and adjust on site, and we check what it looks like from over the fence too, because a floodlight that lights up a neighbour's bedroom becomes a different kind of problem.

Floodlights can run on a sensor, a switch, or both, depending on whether you want them for security or for working.

Sam was prompt with his responses, easy to deal with and very competitive with his price quoting. He arrived on time to the quote, and on time when completing the job. The job was completed cleanly and neatly. Highly recommended. Thanks Sam!

Proper Light Where You Need to See

A floodlight earns its keep when it lights the ground you are working on rather than the sky. We have been mounting and aiming them for over 15 years, on driveways, yards, sheds and workshops, and we check them in the dark before we call the job done.

You get a fixed price before we start, the same team from the quote through to the finish, and your place left tidy. Get in touch today for a free quote.

Asked Questions

Floodlight Questions

  • It depends on the area and the mounting height. Brighter is not automatically better, because too much light from too low creates glare rather than useful coverage.

  • Not if it is aimed properly. We check the spill from outside the boundary as well as inside it before we finish up.

  • Sensor for security, switch for working. Plenty of installs have both, so it triggers on movement but can also be held on while you are out there.

  • Yes, inside and out. If the shed has no supply we can look at running one, which is a separate part of the job worth pricing early.

  • Modern LED floodlights use a fraction of what the old halogen ones did, which is one of the better reasons to replace an older unit.
